
Conceived in the early twentieth century as a grand hotel to host guests attending the biennial Southern Textile Exhibit held in Greenville, South Carolina, the Poinsett began declining in the 1960s due to competition from new motels located along highways. The building fell into disrepair during the late 1980s and was eventually rehabilitated about a decade later as economic activity increased in Greenville's downtown.
